When we take pictures, what are we capturing? Space? Time? Truth? Humanity? Cartier Bresson’s Decisive Moment? In an age of Instagram where imagery has become nearly disposable, where the cheap abundance litters our mind with a constant visual stimulus, and we call anything Iconic if it manages to survive in the zeitgeist for more than few moments: what is photography?
As photography transitioned from film to digital, the art became more democratic. The output changed- we went from contact sheets and clip tests to laptops and external hard drives. What photography was fundamentally changed. It became a new thing, driven by technology, a kind of disposable visual medium.
Photography is old. Older than many nations, and in a way, we’ve been here before. While nothing compares to the billions of images created on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, the world was in love with photography long before then.
Heritage DAO is a look back at the past, powered by the technology of the future. It is a story of who we were, where we were, and why we were.
